The city of Bilbao presented in Korea the benefits for a city or region to design and to implement the Digital Local Agenda, on the occasion of the celebration of the United Cities and Local Governments II World Congress in Jeju (29th October-1st November 2007).

 

CGLU, the biggest regional and local authorities’ organization, established the Committee on Information Society in June 2005, which works to promote the Digital Local Agenda in regions and cities.

 

Bilbao Digital Local Agenda is the result of the political commitment made to the citizens by the mayor of Bilbao during the 'II World Summit of Cities and Local Authorities on the Information Society', held in Bilbao in November 2005. In effect, the design and implementation of a local strategy on ICT is a key element to improve the local government, the communication and participation of citizens, to create wealth and employment.

 

Digital Local Agenda is a strategy in Information Society adopted by cities and local governments trying to meet citizens’ needs and it takes into consideration social economic cultural and institutional particularities of cities and regions to contribute a sustainable development.

 

CGLU is receiving more than 1,800 local leaders coming from 150 countries called under the motto “cities changing and transforming the world” what reflects the dynamism of the regional and local authorities and the important role that they play in the economic development.
